LEVEL I SOUND SOMMELIER COURSE Period: March-May 2024, two weekends for a total of 30 hours

-4 hours Saturday morning 9:00 AM - 1:30 PM with coffee break

Sound & Ear – 4 modules

Daily practice to grow and improve conscious listening: illustration and in-depth analysis of techniques and methodologies to train the ear and enhance perceptive faculties and analysis.

Sound theory and music theory: a targeted approach to understanding Western musical notation and system with specific reference to sound in relation to music.

Sound & Recording – 3 modules

From recording to listening: learning to recognize and understand recording techniques and the journey of sound. How the records we listen to are made.

Sound & History – 1 module

Social history of sound: from the sounds of nature and animals that our ancestors interacted with, to sound as an essential and primary form of communication and defense.

-Sound as a community identity: anthems and marches.

-The sonic universe of the Middle Ages punctuated by bells and wind instruments.

-The 'reserved' sound of Renaissance courts, where particular forms of music enjoyment develop, contrasted with street music.

-The sound of theaters: the birth of opera in music.

-The sound of large orchestras for a new audience.

-The sound of the factory: the new urban soundscape for millions of humans.

-The sound of the twentieth century and the digital era, between metropolitan noise - and its consequences on our psycho-acoustic system - multiplication of emission sources, and the need to build defenses against indiscriminate and involuntary listening.

The composer as a creator of sounds and at the same time a manager of space and time: music and sounds, like gravity, change the perception of time. Reflections and insights.

Reflecting on the essence of sound and its relationship with the listening person. In particular, sound will be studied as an entity and its influence on cognitive faculties (with special reference to the role of imagination and memory).

Meetings with artists, musicians, and sound masters. These are two modules dedicated to those who live and work with sound and music: through their experience and stories, you can connect even more deeply with sound and vibrations.
